President's Message

Happy February!

Welcome to another edition of the newsletter with your SEAOCC president! I am convinced no one reads these president’s messages (send me an email at [email protected] to prove me otherwise), so no harm in getting a little personal, right? Dear diary…

Dear Diary, it’s been another day as SEAOCC president. Once again feeling like if I don’t do it myself, it will not get done—and once again being proven how wrong I am. These SEAOCC volunteers are just something else: getting things done, being helpful, and creating a great community environment. I truly enjoy the passion I see my peers bring to this organization, and I’m not sure they realize how much I appreciate them.

I know—another message that starts with my gratitude for SEAOCC volunteers. Will it ever end? (No.)

And since this is a newsletter, here’s the news:

At the national level, NCSEA has transitioned from a delegate structure to an SEA representative model. SEAOCC will now have two representatives: the current president and likely the vice president. Historically, our vice president served as the Alternate Delegate for California and our chapter’s sole delegate.

At the state level, SEAOC is working to implement a centralized membership and event management system. The rollout is still some time away, but you may begin hearing more about it soon. The goal is a more streamlined and consistent experience for members statewide.

Locally, we started the year strong. January’s joint meeting with ACI drew about 50 attendees, and our February program on snow load failures already has 45 registrations. It’s encouraging to see such strong turnout and engagement from our community. We also have a visit to the Simpson Lab planned for later this month—be sure to sign up. In addition, our VP Alban has been working hard to launch the student competition and organize the SEE Awards. More information on both will be coming soon.

Thank you for being part of SEAOCC and for everything you do to make this chapter active, welcoming, and technically strong. I hope everyone is having a great February. Tell your loved ones how special they are, and I look forward to seeing you at an upcoming event.

Warmly, Sonia Eliseo, SEAOCC President

Committee Reports

Make your opinion count! The 2025 edition of the SE3 survey is officially LIVE!

Join the conversation and participate in the 2025 SE3 survey--the link is available here: survey link and on NCSEA’s website: https://www.ncsea.com/se3-structural-engineering-engagement-equity-survey/.

This is the NCSEA SE3 Committee’s fourth nationwide survey targeted at structural engineers. The responses collected are valuable in understanding trends in our profession. If you are interested in learning more about NCSEA SE3’s previous surveys, past publications are available here: https://www.se3committee.com/surveydevelopment.

SE3’s mission is to attract and retain the best and brightest into our profession; and to ensure ALL structural engineers have a clear pathway to success. The SE3 survey is an ongoing effort to identify trends, understand the underlying factors, and initiate industry-wide conversations. Findings from past iterations of this survey included insight into why engineers leave the profession, the importance of mentorship, and the existence of a nuanced gender pay gap.

Responses are anonymous and confidential, and data collected will not be linked to you or your employer/firm. Dynamic Benchmarking, a leading technology provider serving associations nationwide, collects, anonymizes, and analyzes all survey data. This means that neither your personal information nor your firm’s details will be linked to the data, ensuring full anonymity and privacy.

Voting will close on Feb 27, 2026

NCSEA News

We'd like to remind our members to take a few minutes to complete the NCSEA SE3 Survey (SE3 (Structural Engineering Engagement & Equity) Survey - NCSEA), which will close at the end of the month. The SE3 survey collects data regarding engagement, benefits, work environment, mentorship, and other important aspects of the current structural engineering industry experience. Please note that this is a separate survey from the Compensation and Benefits Survey many of you completed in the fall. This data will inform publications, webinars, and other content throughout 2026; make your voice heard!
