President's Message
I hope you are all having a great start to the year! This month, we had the opportunity to hear from Jennifer Shively, who shared insights from the SEAOCC Sustainable Design Committee on the recent mid-cycle update to CALGreen that took effect on July 1, 2024. Her presentation provided valuable information on how these embodied carbon measures impact structural engineers, including which building types are affected and the different compliance pathways. Thank you to everyone who attended and contributed to the discussion!
Looking ahead, I encourage you to mark your calendars for our upcoming March dinner event, which will focus on a topic shaping the future of our profession: Artificial Intelligence in Structural Engineering. This special session will explore how AI is being integrated into design, analysis, and project workflows, offering both opportunities and challenges for engineers. More details will be shared soon, but this is an event you won’t want to miss!
Student night is on the horizon and will be the focus of our April Dinner Meeting. Please keep an eye out for more details for this annual event, it’s one of my personal favorites and I look forward to continuing to connect with our students and younger members.
As always, I’m grateful for our engaged community and the meaningful conversations we continue to have. Whether through attending events, mentoring young engineers, or advocating for our profession, your contributions help strengthen and advance structural engineering.
I look forward to seeing you at next month’s meeting and continuing these important discussions.
Laura Rice, S.E.

2025 SEAOC SE Pathways | Applications COMING SOON!
Structural Engineers Association of California (SEAOC) is pleased to present an opportunity for structural engineering students and early-career professionals to participate in the 2025 SE Pathways Cohort kicking off at the 2025 SEAOC Convention in San Diego, CA, September 3-5. With activities during the convention and throughout the following year, the Pathways Program provides opportunities for aspiring or new engineers to network with colleagues and practicing professionals throughout the state of California; learn key issues impacting the SE profession, including the need to improve workforce equity and diversity; and meet trade representatives who may assist them in future practice. Most importantly, cohort members will help shape the future of Structural Engineering in California. SEAOC encourages interested Structural Engineering Students and Early Career Professionals, especially individuals belonging to groups traditionally underrepresented in the profession, to apply to join the 2025 SE Pathways Cohort. Students should be in their third year of undergraduate engineering and have structural engineering emphasis in their studies. Early-career professionals should be within their first three years of structural engineering industry involvement. Applications open February 28th and are due by March 30th. Those interested can learn more at the SE Pathways Website and sign up to get notifications about the application HERE. To become one of this year’s valued SE Pathways sponsors, please visit the SEAOC SE Pathways Sponsorship Page. |

NCEES Survey for Licensed SEs
NCEES is currently seeking licensed structural engineers to participate in a professional activities and knowledge study, or PAKS, for the PE Structural exam. The results of this online survey will be used to update specifications for the exam, which is used throughout the United States for licensing purposes. NCEES requires a cross section of licensed professional engineers practicing structural engineering—including those working in industry, consulting, the public sector, and academia—to complete an online survey about the tasks and knowledge required of a licensed structural engineer with four to six years of experience to practice in a manner that safeguards the health, safety, and welfare of the public. The survey can be completed in approximately 50-60 minutes and will remain open until March 10, 2025. Please click on the link, https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/NCEES_PE_Structural_Engineering_Survey_2025 for more detailed information and to start the survey.

What is The Story Behind Your Computer or Phone Wallpaper?
"I have an eclectic set of interests….my current personal computer’s background reflects a couple of those. Tinkaton driving truck-kun as they orbit the planet looking for more people to Iseki combines a number of the genres I’m currently reading / playing on my Switch.
