President's Message

I hope that everyone’s return to the office after the Holidays was safe.  The December Holiday Social at FlatStick Pub was a good time with good people.  Check out the link below for pictures of the event.  Thanks to Roy Lobo (Vice President) and Allison Konwinski (Director) for organizing the event, and special thanks to Norm Scheel (Fellow & All-Around Great-Guy) for sponsoring the event.

December also saw the culmination of SEAOCC’s Executive Secretary search.  The ad hoc Executive Secretary Search Committee was unanimous in our decision to extend the offer to Mary Lee Hellner, who will be starting in February.

The January Joint Dinner Meeting with ACI was well attended at the Club Pheasant, where attendees listened to Assemblyman James Gallagher’s perspective on the impacts of California Legislation to the construction industry.

Coming up on January 30th is SEAOCC’s Seminar on FEMA P-2006 (ASCE-41 Design Examples).  There is still time to register if you haven’t yet.  Keep your eyes peeled for future Seminars, including one in March that will be dedicated to Concrete Design.

At the state level, SEAOC has started a new long-range planning effort that is being facilitated by Central’s Chris Tokas.  If you have questions or comments, please reach out to me.  Additionally, the state has announced that the Structural/Seismic Design Manuals based on the 2018 IBC will be published soon.

If you haven’t logged into the SEAOCC.org website recently, please take some time to do so and update your contact information.  Having up-to-date information is critical for our communications.

Lastly, save June 4th for the 2020 SEAOCC Golf Tournament at Teal Bend!

Sincerely,

Benjamin Ian Faircloth

2019-2020 SEAOCC President

Committee Reports

sustainable Design committee

By Ryan Miller, S.E., SEAOCC SDC Co-Chair

The SEAOCC Sustainable Design Committee is kicking off the new year with a social meeting on January 8th at 4pm where we will talk about the topics our committee would like to pursue in the year 2020. Possible topics include continuing our assistance with the sustainable concrete mix design study with SEAONC, the SE2050 challenge, and coordination with other committees to further our knowledge of resiliency, mass timber, and state legislation, among others.

If you are interested in learning more about how structural engineers can have an impact on project sustainability, please feel free to join our meetings. There is no particular level of experience needed; everyone is welcome. Our regular meetings will be held on the second Wednesday of each month at noon as a web-meeting. Our January 8th kickoff meeting will be at 4pm at a location in downtown Sacramento that sells hoppy refreshments (TBD). Let us know you’re interested by contacting Lisa Podesto or Ryan Miller.

Volunteers Wanted - Student Competition

We are looking for volunteers to help with the SEAOCC Student Competition. The competition will be held on Saturday, February 29, 2020 at Sacramento State. If you have not heard of this before, this is a quick competition held once a year, where the students form a small team and attend a competition where they are given approximately 4 hours, materials, and a set of guidelines from which to build a simple structure. The structure is then tested compared to the other structures that were built that day. The students are then given a few days to prepare a presentation for the general meeting to explain what they built and how it performed. If you are interested or have any questions, please contact Amy Hopkins at [email protected]com
