SEAOCC Webinar: Top 10 Healthcare Facilities Opportunities for Structural Engineers in 2021

The changing conditions of California’s healthcare building environment presents extraordinary opportunities for bold and creative Structural Engineers to reimagine the services they provide.   The pandemic, earthquakes, increase demand, and a need for strong technical leaders to correct challenging conditions has never presented more compelling reasons for Structural Engineers to explore new ways of mobilizing their special expertise.

Joseph La Brie, S.E.

Mr. La Brie is a registered Civil and Structural Engineer in California and Nevada. He has been a member of Structural Engineers Association of Southern California and has served as President and on the Board of Directors in recent years.

He was the founder of a progressive multidiscipline hospital design firm called MakeItRight, Inc. established in 2002.  With Structural Engineering as the backbone of the firm's technical expertise and hospital design as the focus of its mission, the firm offered new design value tailor made for the development of hospital facilities and the important building systems within them.   In May of 2010 he founded a state-of-the-art Seismic Simulation Laboratory, Dynamic Certification Laboratory (DCL).

From 2005 to 2013 he served as a Member of the Hospital Building Safety Board (HBSB) and was Chair of the Board for four those years.

Capital Improvements, New Buildings, Seismic Retrofit Projects, and his attention to issues related to the Seismic considerations for non-structural components make up his robust work experience.  He has been vigilant to follow and stay current with the technical developments of California’s Hospital Building Seismic Upgrade Program (Senate Bill 1953).

Mr. La Brie is currently the OSHPD Regional Compliance Officer supervising the Inspection Services Unit (ISU).
