Speakers

Ben Mohr, S.E., Associate, HOK

Ben Mohr has over ten years of structural engineering experience, including both retrofit and new design. His portfolio includes historically significant structures, aviation, and sports facilities. Ben holds graduate degrees in both Architecture and Structural Engineering. His projects have won multiple awards at the local, state, and national level. He recently served as SEAOC Seismology Chair, and as project manager for the 2019 SEAOC Blue Book. He currently serves as a Director for the SEAONC Board.

Leo Panian, S.E., Principal, Tipping Structural Engineers

Leo Panian practices from the intersection of seismic engineering, advanced analytics, and new technology, to deliver cost-efficient, high-performance projects for his clients. His career has focused on creating practicable design solutions founded on an expert understanding of structural performance. Leo has led and managed many of Tipping’s ambitious projects, garnering regional and national recognition for innovation and engineering excellence in seismic design. He earned his MS in structural engineering from UC Berkeley and his BS in structural engineering from UC San Diego. Leo joined Tipping in 1997 and was named principal in 2011.

Clay Slocum, P.E., Pavements Engineer, California Nevada Cement Association

Clay Slocum joined CNCA as the Northern California/Northern Nevada pavements engineer in January 2014. He provides technical expertise, education, concrete resources, and several other services to municipalities, engineers, and developers to advance the applications and use of cementitious roadway solutions for streets, highways, and parking areas. Clay specializes in conventional concrete, full-depth reclamation, concrete overlays, and pervious concrete, but is knowledgeable on most cement-related applications. Clay is active in local societies including ASCE, ACI, SNCA, and others. Prior to joining CNCA, Clay worked as a geotechnical consulting engineer in Walnut Creek, California. He graduated from University of the Pacific with a bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering and a minor in Engineering Management before continuing his education at U.C. Berkeley where he obtained his Master’s degree in Civil Engineering. Clay is a licensed civil engineer in the states of California and Nevada.

Michael D. Smith, Infrastructure Solutions Manager, CEMEX

Michael D Smith has over 20 years of experience working in the construction industry. Michael works for one of the largest material suppliers in the world. He personally spent many years working with contractors to help improve, educate, explore, and develop their slab on grade and pavement markets. Working with the contractors, he helped to provide both cost effective and maintenance friendly solutions for their customers. He has worked with Contractors, Developers, Engineers, and Municipalities to explore options to address budgets, time constraints, maintenance issues, and constructability.

Bijan Aalami, S.E., Ph.D, Professor Emeritus, SFSU and Principal, ADAPT

Dr. Aalami is Professor Emeritus of San Francisco State University; and Founder and Principal of ADAPT Corporation, a structural engineering and concrete software development company in California, serving clients in over 70 countries. He is also an honorary member of the Argentine Structural Engineering Association, as well as former Vice Chancellor and Professor at Sharif University of Technology (previously Aryarmehr University of Technology). A renowned educationalist, Dr. Aalami has held courses on design of structural concrete and post-tensioning in over 35 countries worldwide, and has published extensively on analysis and design of post-tensioned structures. He is a recipient of the ACI Design Award for application of advanced engineering to a notable concrete structure. He is also a Legend, Fellow and Life Member of the Post-Tensioning Institute.

Nicolas Rodrigus, S.E., Senior Associate, Walter P. Moore

As a Senior Associate in Walter P Moore's San Francisco office, Nic serves as the west coast practice leader for commercial projects, responsible for developing client relationships and expanding the firm's west coast portfolio. Specializing in structural design, analysis, and project management for structures in seismically active areas around the world, Nic has successfully delivered residential, hospitality, office, and mixed-use highrise projects for more than 15 years. He is a recognized expert in Performance-Based Design (PBD) and earthquake engineering, and has accepted various leadership roles in the development of building code standards, including the seismic provisions of the national concrete building code.
