The Carbon Imperative: Ushering in a New Age of Building Design

Lisa Podesto, P.E., Lendlease and Nicolas Pauli, P.E., Lionakis, SEAOC Sustainable Committee Members

The building industry is at a critical intersection of cultural change straddling the divide between people and planet. As the world undergoes the largest wave of urban growth in human history, society is also recognizing the very real effects of climate change which is motivating a shift in both policy and societal values. Because the building industry is the single largest producer of greenhouse gas emissions and therefore the largest anthropogenic contributor to climate change, the business of designing buildings has the potential to be very different in the coming years.

As we enter an era of heightened environmental scrutiny, the SEAOCC Sustainable Design Committee invites you to come learn about the “Carbon Imperative” as it relates to structural engineers. Recent industry initiatives, the concept of carbon budgeting for buildings and other potential tools for evaluating carbon impacts will be discussed.

Bio: The Sustainable Design Committee seeks to establish and advocate for the role of the structural engineer in the developing field of sustainable design. It also seeks to provide guidelines for the challenges of sustainability in the structural engineering design practice, and to review current projects and trends in sustainability. The overall aim is to make sustainability an integral part of the structural engineer’s thinking and provide resources needed in the decision making process. The Committee welcomes engineers of all experience levels to help promote sustainable design.
